Scott, I’m just trying to live out my Derridean host/parasite fantasies. And my handlers told me there was no practical application of poststructural philosophy!

Plus, if I started my own blog, I’d actually have to be creative and think of things to write about. As a trained lit scholar, I’m a better reactor than actor.

Literal Rendering: taking translators to task (via The Page): Applying Benjamin to Pessoa et al (or whatever to whoever), with a nod towards the influence of Creeley‘s syntactical maneuvers on modern Brasilian poetry.

“... the significance of fidelity as ensured by literalness is that the work reflects the great longing for linguistic complementation. A real translation is transparent; it does not cover the original, does not block its light, but allows the pure language, as though reinforced by its own medium, to shine upon the original all the more fully. This may be achieved, above all, by a literal rendering of the syntax which proves words rather than sentences to be the primary element of the translator. For if the sentence is the wall before the language of the original, literalness is the arcade.”

“A literal rendering of the syntax completely demolishes the theory of reproduction of meaning and is a direct threat to comprehensibility. ... Meaning is served far better—and literature and language far worse—by the unrestrained license of bad translators. ... [T]ranslation must in large measure refrain from wanting to communicate something, from rendering the sense, and in this the original is important to it only insofar as it has already relieved the translator and his translation of the effort of assembling and expressing what is to be conveyed.”

Luther: Plus, if I started my own blog, I’d actually have to be creative and think of things to write about.

But Luther, blogging is explicitly the prose form par excellence of reaction. Some blogging tools assume that you won’t ever post an entry without a link elsewhere. And then, as quickly as possible after reacting, you get comments to react to. A reactor will never find a better medium.
