Greetings From Ha Noi
Posted by John Holbo on 10/24/06 at 01:38 AM
I’m vacationing in Vietnam for a few days.
Yesterday I sat by a lake and just stared at a little temple while letting Tom Waits, Swordfishtrombones, play all the way through. Then I sat by the pool and read Samuel Delany, Babel-17. Then I read Joe Haldeman, The Forever War. Next up: Haruki Murakami, Norwegian Wood. After that, rereading some Cordwainer Smith. I like the fact that pool-side reading/iPod fodder indulged in exotic locales always seems to set up permanent, vaguely synaesthetic associations. Is it like that for you, too? (I read Terry Pratchett, Thud!, on the plane. That doesn’t really count because planes aren’t really anywhere special. And I feel like Pratchett it sort of coasting on some well-established Guards! Guards! themes with this one.)
This afternoon we’re off to see the waterpuppets. I really have no idea what that even means.
Apparently there’s a shop not far off, where you can get your own portrait incorporated into old-style propaganda posters. (Or I guess you could have them make Andre the Giant Has A Cadre stickers.)
This isn’t a terribly substantive post, mind you. Just thought you should know that the reason that I haven’t responded to anything recently is that I haven’t read a word of it.
