Cultural Studies Fandango
1. Michael Bérubé critiques cultural studies in The Chronicle Review.
2. And he supplies supplementary information re fan studies over at Frameshift.
3. Ira Livingston critiques Bérubé [edit].
4. And so does the UC Davis Cultural Studies Graduate Group.
5. Bérubé replies to his critics.
Comments
One could really leave out Ira Livingston’s critique, which is just a bunch of sarcasm and (as Bérubé correctly says) “strained (but heroic!) gender-baiting” in place of a real critique. The UC Davis response is much more on point.
literary/cultural academia so often provides the dispiriting spectacle of radically left wing people and those who are merely very left wing ruthlessly savaging each other, accusing each of aiding and abetting the enemy....and that Livingstone piece, wow. Single most embarassing thing I think I’ve ever read by a talented critic.
